The passengers in an SUV driving under the Route 3A overpass in Chelmsford got a nasty surprise when parts of the bridge fell on the car, damaging its windshield and closing two lanes of traffic.

A family was inside the car when the sky fell, according to 7News’ Nicole Oliverio. They reportedly escaped uninjured except for a few cuts to a child’s hand. Their car, a Ford Escape, was towed away from the scene.

A spokesman for MassDOT told WBZ that paint and other debris broke off a rusted beam supporting the overpass. Two lanes of traffic on the northbound side of I-495 have been closed while MassDOT crews repair and clean the bridge.
